The University of Louisville, more commonly referred to as U of L, is a public university, maintained by the Kentucky General Assembly, located in Louisville, which is the county seat of Jefferson County and the largest city in the US state of Kentucky, having a population estimated at a number of more than 700 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, the Louisville Metropolitan Area having more than 1 200 000 people living within its limits.
U of L was founded in 1798, being of the 1st city-owned public university in USA and one of the 1st universities chartered west of the Allegheny Mountains. The founding of the University of Louisville, in downtown Louisville, was made with the merger of the Louisville Medical Institute, the law school and the Louisville Collegiate Institution, in 1846.
U of L is academically organized into 12 colleges and schools, through which it offers its students various degrees in numerous fields of study, among which there are: College of Arts and Sciences, J. B. Speed School of Engineering, Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, Graduate School and the School of Public Health and Information Sciences.
The athletic teams from U of I are known as the Louisville Cardinals, or Cards, for short, who compete the Big East Conference, since 2005, being nationally known for their achievements in men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, dance and cheerleading. The football team has also gained national attention, since 2001, finishing in the top 6 in both the final Bowl Championship Series and AP polls, in 2 of the last 4 seasons.
The list of notable U of I alumni contains resonant names such as Static Major - Singer, Song Writer, most famous from his work with Lil Wayne on Lollipop, Robert Nardelli - CEO of Chrysler, former CEO of the Home Depot, former CEO of General Electric Company, James B. Edwards - former U.S. Secretary of Energy and Governor of South Carolina, James Gilbert Baker - winner of Presidential Award for Merit, developed the Baker-Schmidt telescope, pushed for U2 spy plane development, invented first safe intravenous fluid, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
